THE ROAD & THE RED LIGHT … RESPECT THE RED LIGHT

THE ROAD:

Did you know?

A road is a path established over land for the passage of vehicles, people and animals. So you want to show respect to ALL Road Users … People and Animals too. Have you ever seen a Road? Can you identify Road users near you?

The Road provides a dependable pathway for moving people and gods from one place to another; and there are 3 classifications of roads, viz: Single carriageway, Dual/Multiple carriageways and Expressway. A single carriageway is a road with one or more lanes. It has traffic flowing in opposite direction without a central reservation.

A Dual/Multiple carriageway is a road which has multiple lanes with traffic going in opposite direction. They may or may not be physically separated by non-passable dividers such as a concrete barrier. The Expressway is a specially designed and restricted highway. It is divided with barriers which make traffic in opposite directions completely separated from each other.

INTERCHANGES:

An interchange is a special intersection. It’s designed to enable road users cross, enter or leave the expressway without interfering with the flow of traffic. There are four types of Interchange: cover leaf, Diamond, Trumpet, and Directional.

Cover leaf interchange is designed, to allow turning movement off or into the road expressway from four directions using loop type connections. It eliminates left turn and traffic conflicts for all movements. Name a cover leaf interchange you know.

A diamond interchange has four ramps. The ramps allow vehicles to enter or leave the main highway. It is used where a major road crosses a minor road. It avoids interweaving traffic flow, and most effective in areas where traffic is light. Do you know any diamond interchange in your state?

Trumpet interchanges provide access to the Expressway at a T-Intersection.

Directional Interchanges are used to transfer high volume of traffic, particularly where two major roads intersect.

ROAD JUNCTIONS:

A junction is a place where two or more roads meet. We have the T-Junction, Y-Junction, the Cross Road, and the Round-about.

T-Junction is a place where two roads meet in the shape of the letter – T.

Y-Junction is a place where two roads meet in the form of letter – Y.

A Cross Road is a place where two roads of equal size cross each other.

A Round-about is a place where two or more roads meet forming a circle that ensures that all traffic must go round in the same direction.
